CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS AND PATTERN FORMATION IN MARTENSITES

Crumples in a sheet of paper, wrinkles on curtains, mixtures of phases in alloys, and Abrikosov lattices in superconductors are examples patterns in materials. My research goal is to understand the formation of such patterns from the point of view of energy minimization, which is is one of the challenges of modern Calculus of Variations.
